HPL’s Rs 1200 cr Supermax project disrupted on indefinite strike by temporary workers

23-Nov-09
Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd plans to raise capacity from 5,20,000 tpa to 6,70,000 tpa through Project Supermax over a planned shutdown for 75 days. The Rs 1200 crore Project Supermax has been disrupted by an indefinite strike by 1500 temporary workers triggered by a demand for wage revision and induction of temporary workers on the payroll. Conciliation proceedings for settlement of the charter of demand between HPL and HPL Contractors' Workers Union held in the presence of the additional labour commissioner failed, following which the workers went on an indefinite strike. The charter of demands contains 40-41 points. The main demand is wage revision as the earlier wage settlement had expired in June.
