With effect from September 9, 2011, Kolkatta is to ban plastic carry bags less than 40 microns thick, all plastic cups and plates along with plastic packets of gutkha and pan masala. The environment department appears serious about enforcing the law with the help of Kolkata Police's enforcement branch.
