In the first major action under the plastic ban law, the Maharashtra pollution control Board (MPCB) has ordered the closure of several plastic bags manufacturing units in Mumbai for violating the law. MPCB is an enforcing authority under the Maharashtra plastic Carry Bags (Manufacture and Usage) Rules 2006.
The action came after MPCB issued notices to 1,062 bag manufacturing units for failing to comply with the law. Of these, 167 units (including 142 in Mumbai) have now been asked to shut down for not following the state's directives on not manufacturing and selling plastic bags below 50 microns. Water and electricity supply will be discontinued to these units.
Rules in Maharashtra state specify that the minimum thickness of carry bags made of virgin or recycled plastic be 50 microns and that the size not less than 8x12 inches.
After providing sufficient time for technology change and other documentation, MPCB again carried out a special drive through 11 regional offices.
