New self-crosslinking styrene butadiene polymers for nonwovens and specialty markets unveiled

18-Apr-09
US-based OMNOVA Solutions recently unveiled its new line of OMNABOND™ self-crosslinking styrene butadiene polymers for the nonwovens, coatings and construction markets. According to the company, OMNABOND polymers offer a number of advantages over standard styrene butadiene emulsions, including improved wet and dry tensile properties, filler acceptance, color fastness, caustic resistance, and adhesion to both synthetic and natural fibers. Relative to current available self-crosslinking products, OMNOVA's OMNABOND polymers are said to feature considerably lower levels of formaldehyde, thus offering health and environmental benefits. Owing to their wet tensile strength performance, the OMNABOND polymers are ideally suited for number of short- and long-life nonwovens applications including towels, wipes and filtration media amongst other specialty uses. These high strength properties enable lower binder levels making them a high rate substitute for other polymer chemistries, including vinyl acetate ethylene (VAE) and acrylic polymers. Additionally, their accelerated cure rate reduces or eliminates the need for an external catalyst to achieve optimal performance and also can be combined with external cross-linkers, like melamine and urea formaldehyde (UF) resins for long-life applications, including commercial roofing binders.
