Petronas and BASF team up to build refinery at Petronas’ proposed complex in Johor

07-Mar-12
Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) and BASF are considering expansion of operations of BASF Petronas Chemicals Sdn Bhd in Kuantan. The two are collaborating to build a refinery at Petronas’ proposed complex in Pengerang, Johor. A heads of agreement (HOA) has been inked by the two for the Pengerang project and expansion of the Kuantan operations under a RM4 billion investment. Under the terms of the HOA, the partners have agreed to form a new entity (BASF 60%; Petronas 40%) to jointly own, construct and operate production facilities for isononanol, highly reactive polyisobutylene, non-ionic surfactants, methanesulfonic acid, and plants for feedstock materials. These will become an integral part of Petronas’ proposed refinery & petrochemical integrated development (RAPID) complex in Pengerang.
