Reliance introduces CDM project

18-Nov-05
Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has put its first clean development mechanism (CDM) project on the United Nations Framework of Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) validation list, involving the reduction in steam consumption at different sections in its cracker unit at Hazira. This activity consists of two projects based on two different technological and operational measures and seeks validation of 1,53,817 tons in estimated carbon dioxide reductions (CERs), in the 10-year crediting period. The complete project activity is expected to reduce the steam consumption to the tune of 9-10 tons per hour. The project activity is unique in the Indian petrochemical industry because no industry before has tried to replace an entire depropaniser column to reduce its energy consumption. In addition to this, the entire design of the depropaniser column has been developed "in-house" by RIL's technical team. However, since the technology is untested, the failure of the system could result in the stoppage of the plant.
