Research makes mass production of SrPP possible

20-Jul-05
Self-reinforced polypropylene (SrPP) is created through by manipulating plastic at the molecular level, British scientists working for RECYCLE, a research program are planning to use Self-reinforced polypropylene (SrPP) have eliminated production problems and perfected techniques which will allow manufacturers to mass-produce parts using SrPP. The team has overcome the only problem with SrPP- that it is very difficult to mould, join and shape, which was a hinderance to the commercial application of Sapp as a material for vehicle components. SrPP has the advantages of being light, yet stronger than conventional plastics, recyclable and beneficial to the environment. Components built from SrPP, are estimated to be about 57% lighter than the conventional materials, yet they are strong enough. Infact, the products made by SrPP enable better acceleration, braking and handling along with increased fuel economy and lower exhaust emissions. And if they are reduced to crumbs, SrPP can be reused to make something else. The following are expected to be the benefits of using SrPP in making parts of vehicles: · Easy and less expensive to mass-produce than other materials, since the tooling does not have to cope with high pressures or abrasive materials. · Smoother finish than glassfibre-reinforced plastics. · Safer to handle by human operators. Though it can be used in other applications like shin pads, body armour, helmets, suitcases or anything else which requires strong and lightweight plastic that doesn't harm the environment. SrPP's greatest contribution is expected to be in the automotive field.
