Reliance Industries Ltd. plans to raise capacity of its Jamnagar oil refinery to 60 million tpa by 2009, at an approximate investment outlay of Rs 15,000 crore. The expansion is being planned to add a third train, hiking capacity from current 660,000 bpd (33 million tpa) to 1.2 million bpd(60 million tpa). Indications are that talks are on with Bechtel, the engineering, procurement and construction contractor, who had built the Jamnagar refinery in 1990s, as well as other contractors and consultants.
Post capacity expansion, Reliance will become the country's largest refiner surpassing state-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). It is also the only refinery in the country which is able to process a wide variety of crudes - from very light to very heavy (from 18 to 45 degree API) and from sweet to very heavy (with sulphur content from 0 to 4.5%).
The Jamnagar refinery currently produces 11 million tons of diesel, 4 million tons of naphtha and petrol each, 3.6 million tons of jet/avaition turbine fuel/superior kerosene oil, 2.3 million tons of LPG, 2.7 million tons of reformate and 2.5 million tons of petroleum coke.
