Ticona, the world's leading producer of UHMW-PE under the GUR® brand, operates its UHMW-PE facilities in Bishop, Texas and Oberhausen, Germany. Currently it is in the process of setting up a new world-scale plant to increase its global GUR® ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) capacity to about 90,000 tpa. The facility, situated in Guangzhou, will be operational in the second half of 2007. The growing demand for GUR® UHMW-PE is planned to be met by Asian investment with the establishment of this new plant, and will extend the company's global manufacturing capabilities for an expanded product range.
The site selection process for the plant in the Asia-Pacific region is in an advanced stage and the preliminary engineering work is anticipated to be complete. The plan for final engineering and construction of the facility is also underway. GUR® UHMW-PE is considered to have a low coefficient of friction and provide outstanding abrasion resistance and toughness.
