Weeks after Sunoco shut its ethylene complex at Marcus Hook due to an explosion and fire, the company has arrived at a decision to permanently shutter the complex. Insufficient demand for ethylene, ethylene oxide and cyclohexane has acted as a hinderance to repairing or replacing equipment that was damaged in the explosion that took place on May 17. This decision will result in laying off of 40-50 employees and in relocation of some workers to other sites. The downstream facility will source its ethylene requirement from another supplier.
