Teijin commences production of heat-resistant bioplastic in Japan

21-Sep-09
In a step that will enable it to begin development of a full-scale market, Teijin Ltd. has commenced production of its proprietary heat-resistant bioplastic Biofront at a demonstration plant in Matsuyama, Japan. With this production capacity of Biofront will be scaled up to about 1,000 tons from the previous capacity of 200 tpa at a pilot plant in Iwakuni. While the Iwakuni pilot plant produces Biofront from lactide (produced from lactic acid obtained by fermenting starch extracted from plant matter), the new demonstration plant can start from the earlier lactic acid stage, affording more flexibility in the production of varied raw materials.
