Malaysia's Titan Chemicals Corp has selected America based ABB Lummus Global Inc (Lummus) and BASF Technologies for a new olefins conversion unit and a new butadiene plant in Pasir Gudang, Johor. The olefins conversion unit will help optimise the company’s olefins production by converting low-value butenes into propylene and the additional propylene will expand polypropylene capacity to meet growing market needs. Both units are expected to come on-stream by end of 2006, when there will be a sharp increase in demand for both propylene and butadiene in the region.
Under the project, ABB Lummus Global will provide basic engineering and technology licences. The new unit will employ the olefins conversion technology (OCT), licensed by ABB Lummus Global, to convert ethylene and butenes to propylene. An engineering and technical services agreement worth an estimated RM24.3 million has been signed with ABB Lummus Global Inc (Lummus), for the project, construction work for which is expected to begin middle of the year.ABB Lummus, which is part of ABB, is presently a leading global power and automation technology provider.
