US$1.2bn petrochem joint venture planned in Bahrain

A US$1.2 billion Bahraini-German petrochemical joint venture phas been planned to be set up in the kingdom. Negotiations are in the final stages and an official announcement may be made during the visit of German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder to Bahrain on March 2. German engineering and technology firm Linde will provide the technical know-how for the project. The plant will produce polyproplene and polyethylene from naphtha, which is available from Bapco. The plant will create at least 500 high-skilled jobs, and will have Bahraini investors as the major shareholders. The plant to be located near Bapco, is expected to be completed in three years.
