Thai Olefins Plc, a petrochemical subsidiary of PTT Plc, has received sanction for a budget of 960 million baht, to ease water shortages at its Rayong plant and maintain plant production at full capacity. This endeavor aims at addressing the company's short, medium and long term problems due to the water shortages ensuring a supply of about 14,000 to15,000 cubic meters per day without drawing water from the Dok Krai and Nong Plalai reservoirs. The company has not only developed a water distribution system that enables it to handle transfers from ships of 4,000 to 5,000 deadweight tons, but is also known to have already modified its naphtha and other feedstock facilities to hold approximately 100,000cu m of water reserves. Eight ships that will carry a matching capacity will bring in water from supply stations in Bangkok. The company has further progressed in its plans by purchasing about 7,200 cu m of water a day from two private firms. The new additional supplies are expected to keep company operations running at full capacity.
TOC is considering a plan to dig its own wells so that it can be assured of about 300,000 cu m of water per day. This project is likely to be complete in October. It is also to install a desalination unit able to produce 7,200 cu m a day by October and undertake a project with PTT subsidiary National Petroleum Plc on a second permanent desalination unit. The second unit is to cost about 800 million baht and will be able to produce 18,000 cu m of fresh water daily. However, this plant will take about 6-8 months to be constructed.
