Will Europe abandon anti-dumping probe on Asian bags?

22-Nov-05
Subsequent to complaints filed by EU bag makers earlier this year, the European Commission had launched an anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigation into imports of PE bags from China, Malaysia and Thailand. However, as per the Association of European Union Importers for Plastic Sacks and Bags (EUPSB), the European Commission should stop its anti-dumping proceedings against polyethylene bag imports from Asia as estimates by the Commission for total community production of polyethylene bags was understated. Production across Europe for the year 2004 was estimated at 1.240 million tons by the Commission. However, based on AMI's Guide to the Polyethylene Film Industry in Europe, EUPSB estimates this figure at a minimum of 1.758 million tons.
