Work commences on Assam petrochemicals complex

10-Apr-07
A much-delayed petrochemicals complex has been launched in the insurgency hit state of Assam. The Rs 54.6 bln (US$1.27 billion) gas cracker complex is to be sited at Lepetkata, 410 km (255 miles) east of the state capital, Guwahati. This project is of particular importance as this opportunity for development could usher in an era of peace and prosperity. The project, which was initially to be executed by a Reliance Industries-promoted company, was held up as the firm was unable to finalise a gas sale agreement. The project is promoted by state-run GAIL (India) Ltd. (with a 70% stake) and will source feedstock from Oil India Ltd. (OIL), Oil and Natural Gas Corp. (ONGC) and Numaligarh Refinery Ltd.
