Bayer has offered a cautious outlook for its chemicals business for 2009, as demand is expected to take a hit in an impending global economic slowdown. Bayer, world´s number one polycarbonate manufacturer, said earnings at its plastics and foams unit MaterialScience, which accounted for 31% of group sales in the first 9 months of 2008, would decline further in 2009. Q3 core profit slid 4.2% as strong demand for its prescription drugs and farming pesticides failed to offset a slump at its cyclical plastics and foams unit. Group profit is expected to rise in 2009, citing strong demand at its defensive healthcare business.
