Leverkusen, Germany based Bayer will spend US$1.8 billion until 2009, to build facilities to produce methylene diphenyl dissocyanate (MDI) and polycarbonate. This will be its biggest investment abroad on a 1.5 square km site in Caojing, China's largest chemical industry park. Bayer is increasing MDI production capacity at the Caojing plant to 3.5 lakh metric tpa from 2.3 lakh tpa. The project will also churn out 2 lakh tpa polycarbonate by the end of 2007.
The German firm is boosting production to meet growing demand Chian as well as in Asia Pacific. Bayer expects global demand for polycarbonates to grow 8-10% a year in the next few years. Bayer targets $1 billion of annual sales from the China trading unit in five years.
