Blast at BP's Chocolate Bayou plant

12-Aug-05
An explosion and fire occurred in BP's Chocolate Bayou plant's Olefin 2 unit, which produces plastic feedstock, including hydrogen, ethylene and polypropylene. Parts of the plant are being shut down systematically. The fire is expected to grow smaller and ultimately burn out, but they have no timetable for that happening yet. The cause of the explosion is unknown. The leak at the Texas City plant is the third incident there this year, including a deadly explosion in March, in which officials have recommended a shelter-in-place. The company recently announced successful completion of an expansion and turnaround of its Olefins No.1 unit. Changes have been made to meet stricter Texas Commission on Environmental Quality environmental operating laws
