Chevron Phillips eyes more opportunities in Qatar's petrochem sector

12-Jun-06
Despite shortages, higher energy prices and hardening global interest rates that have affected petroleum projects, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company is eyeing more opportunities in the Qatar's petrochem sector. Chevron's investments in Qatar's petrochemical sector are estimated to be close to $2 bln upon completion of the Q-Chem II project. By the end of this decade, Chevron may look to more opportunities, depending on feed stock supplies. The petrochemical sector in the Middle East offer more potential as projects that are usually bigger in scale and magnitude need hydrocarbon feed stocks, particularly gas resources. Qatar, sitting on the world's third largest gas reservoir with 900trn cu ft, is aiming to be a key player mainly in the Gas-to-Liquids segment.
