Deemed University status has been recommended to the Union HRD Ministry for Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET). A proposal to allot 3 acres of land from Indian Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Limited is being considered. CIPET- an autonomous institute under the Ministry has achieved self-sustainability in revenue and expenditure. In 2004-05, against an income of Rs 21 crore from training and technical activity, expenditure was Rs 18 crore.
CIPET, with contribution in developing trained manpower for plastics and allied industries, has been granted approval for three more centres in Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Haryana. MTech programs at CIPET units in Hajipur, Haldia and Bhopal have also commenced. The Sultanate of Oman has corroborated interest in establishing a Plastics Technology Training and Development Centre (PTTDC) under the administrative control of CIPET.
