Density reduction upto 30% is being promised by Dow, with the introduction of its High Density Foam Technology (HDFT) for production of reduced density thin gauge thermoforming sheet that is considered to find way in the European market in the near future.
This licensed technology, patented in the US, with application in polystyrene and polypropylene resins, creates a foam sheet structure by introducing carbon dioxide into the polymer melt within the metering zone of the extruder. This is regarded as best used to create a low-density core in a multi-layer sheet system, ensuring that a high-quality surface is maintained.
The development trials using this process have recorded an almost 20% reduction in weight on thermoformed meat trays and a nearly 25% reduction on yogurt pots without any known loss of function.
