Two of the world's biggest chemical companies, Du Pont De Nemours & Co. and Dow Chemical Co. are weighed down with rising energy costs and higher commodity costs that are pressuring them to increase prices for their products. These prices hikes come at a time when customers are putting up firmer resistance to price increases.
As the petrochem industry provides basic raw materials in the manufacturing chain of several allied industries, will these high costs in turn slow demand and reduce operating volumes? Is this an early indication of an economic downturn?
