Equistar Chemicals LP is to spend over US$125 mln on pollution controls and clean-up at the plants in Texas, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. The plants include Morris, Ill.; Clinton, Iowa; an inactive plant in Lake Charles, La.; and Channelview, Chocolate Bayou, Corpus Christi and La Porte, Texas. The Houston based chemical maker has been ordered by the federal government to address air, water and hazardous waste violations at these petrochemical plants.
Equistar will pay a civil penalty to the tune of US$2.5 mln to be divided among the federal government and participating states. The company will also spend US$6.56 million on federal and state supplemental environmental projects.
The case began when inspections at the plants by the EPA found that Equistar had violated laws concerning the immediate reporting of spills and releases of hazardous substances to federal and state emergency response centers.
