Ethylene capacity in Asia to spike from 40 mln tpa to 64 mln tpa by 2015

14-Oct-08
An upsurge in capacity additions is expected in Asia-Pacific region, scheduled to come on stream in the period from 2009-11, peaking in Q1 and Q4 of 2009. Ethylene capacities will increase to over 64 mln tpa from 40 million tpa by 2015. China will be the hub of new capacity additions, adding 14 million tpa by 2015 to its existing production of 10 million tpa. China will increase its naphtha consumption from to about 825,000 by 2010 and more than 1.1 million b/d in 2015 from 600,000 b/d in 2007.Because most of the new ethylene production capacity is based on naphtha feedstocks, its consumption also will increase greatly. China will become the largest naphtha consumer in Asia by 2011.
