At least one person was killed and 77 injured Thursday in an explosion and fire at the Williams Olefin plant in the Louisiana town of Geismar. The process of making propylene was underway at the plant when the explosion occurred.
The plant was in the process of expansion and had no major violations, according to Cheryl Nolan, assistant secretary of the state Department of Environmental Quality’s Office of Environmental Services. The explosion at 8:37 a.m. prompted the evacuation of about 300 workers.
