First PP-based ultra-transparent, low-melt flow resin unveiled for use in extrusion blow molding

LyondellBasell has unveiled first propylene-based copolymer, Pristene RM2091 which exhibits ultra-high transparency/low-melt flow for use in extrusion blow molding applications and forms a part of company's metallocene-based resin family. The high-performance resin is produced using the company's proprietary single-site catalyst and is being introduced as part of the new Pristene family of resins. Pristene RM2091 resin has a melt flow rate of 3.5g/10min, and shows excellent melt stability. Breakthrough standards for clarity and stiffness are also met by Pristene RM2091 resin. It can be considered for use in the replacement of traditional materials such as glass or amorphous transparent polymers including polycarbonate (PC), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and PET-glycol (PET-G) in extrusion blow molded applications. Besides, new Pristene grade saves time and energy as it offers ease of processing with no plate-out characteristics and does not require pre-drying or high processing temperatures linked with resins like PC and PET-G. As against rigid PVC, the new resin is not sensitive to shear and is not susceptible to the degradation. The resin delivers weight savings without sacrificing functionality due to the significant density advantage it offers. The end result is an alternative to high-performance engineered amorphous clear resins. The resin is perfectly suited for blow molders who require cost-effective alternative with reasonable toughness for transparent, hot-fill bottles. Lastly, Pristene RM2091 resin can be used in baby bottles and water coolers as it belongs to a high level purity of metallocene-based PO copolymers.
