Hitachi Zosen Corp. and CPR Co. to produce biodegradable plastic from cassava

13-Jun-06
Hitachi Zosen Corp. and CPR Co. will jointly produce biodegradable plastic from cassava, a plant grown in the tropics. The cost of producing plastic from cassava is half that of making corn-based plastic, which has already come into practical use, and will become a cheaper alternative to conventional plastics, besides being less harmful for the environmental. The production of the new material is scheduled to begin in 2008 in Vietnam at 3,000-5,000 tpa, rising to 100,000 tons in a couple of years when plant is dedicated to its production.
