HMPP fiber launched by Innegrity

18-May-07
Innegrity has developed a new high-modulus polypropylene (HMPP) fiber that offers specific tensile strength and modulus similar to fiberglass but at a much lower density (0.9 g/cm3 or 0.5 oz/in3). The fiber reportedly has twice the toughness of aramid fiber, with a dielectric constant one-third that of glass fiber at a cost greater than fiberglass but less than Kevlar and carbon. Because of the density difference, ultimate properties are achieved in hybrid composites, using HMPP in conjunction with glass, Kevlar or carbon: a composite featuring a 50/50 glass/PP hybrid (by volume) weighs 30 percent less than a composite reinforced by glass fiber alone, and it has similar physical properties. Two fiber types are under development: Source: Innegrity
