HPL signs technology transfer deal with Basell for expansion

31-Jan-06
Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd (HPL) has signed a landmark technology transfer deal with Basell to use its patented technologies Spherilene and Spheripol, effecting a major expansion. The technologies will enable HPL to augment its polyethylene and polypropylene capacities. HPL will also get new chemical catalysts that will develop high- grade polymers used to make automobile components and household durables. The expansion is expected to be complete by mid 2007. Basell's Spherilene technology would help HPL increase HDPE swing plant capacity from 260,000 tpa to 320,000 tpa. The Spheripol technology will increase capacity at the polypropylene plant from 220,000 tpa to 320,000 tpa. For the HDPE/LLDPE swing plant for which HPL uses Mitsui's slurry CX process, capacity would be increased from 300,000 tpa to 320,000 tpa. Naphtha cracking capacity will increase from 520,000 tpa to 670,000. Basell is the world's largest producer of polypropylene and advanced polyolefins and a leading supplier of polyethylene catalysts and processes
