At a press conference conducted by the Indian Plastics Federation to announce the dates for Indplas '06, an international exhibition on plastics, president of Indian Plastics Federation, K M Tibrewala, made this announcement that many units to set up shop in the upcoming Poly Park in Sankrail, Howrah may start functioning from 2007. Land has already been allotted to the various units and once all the procedures are complete production may start in these units. Mr Tibrewala said the federation has decided that the surplus from the event will be utilised to set up a centre for excellence on plastics in the Poly Park.
"Generally small-scale entrepreneurs cannot avail of sophisticated technology and goods from the market but from this centre small-scale entrepreneurs will be able to access different plastics materials that will facilitate their production. Since many units will be setting up shop here it can be expected that an average investment of Rs 200 crores will be made," said Mr Tibrewala.
The West Bengal government has allotted a plot of land measuring about 1.02 acres for free to the federation to set up this centre for excellence. Around 38 units have been allotted land in the 38-acre Poly Park and the land will be handed over to them in December. An exhibition on plastics on this scale has never been conducted in Kolkata. The exhibition is being organised by the Indian Plastics Federation and Plastindia Foundation in association with the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation Limited. The exhibition will be held at the Science City Exhibition ground from November 24 to 27.
Around 300 national and international exhibitors will be taking part in the exhibition. Apart from leading exhibitors like Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd, Reliance Industries Ltd, Gujarat State Fertilisers & Chemicals Ltd, GAIL India Ltd, South Asian Petrochemicals Ltd in the raw materials sector, leading machinery manufacturers such as Windsor Machines Ltd., Larsen and Toubro Ltd. will also take part in the exhibition.
"The objective of this exhibition is to showcase the development taking place world over and in India in the field of plastic usage and the processing of plastics. The qualitative aspect of plastic products is going to be showcased. Plastic raw materials, master batteries, quality control and testing equipment will be exhibited. There will also be stalls educating the visitors about plastic waste management and reprocessing techniques," said Amar Seth, chairman of the Exhibition Organising Committee. "People should realise that it is not plastics but littering that is hazardous to the environment. The citizens should also know about the use of plastics in agriculture and horticulture. And in this exhibition you have to see these things to believe it," said Seth. The next such exhibition will be held in 2009. Tibrewala also said that a sum of around Rs 2 crores is being spent to organise this event.
