Selangor has become the first state in Malaysia this year to impose a ban on the usage of PVC pipes. Faced with adverse publicity generated by environmentalist groups and a slowdown in the construction industry, and Malaysia's domestic Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) pipe manufacturers are now looking overseas for survival.
The PVC pipe industry is dependent to a great extent on new constructions projects, which have now become scarce. This scenario has been further compounded by the fact that PVC pipes, unlike steel and iron, have a low replacement rate. The bad publicity on PVC by environmentalists have caused users to consider competitive materials for plumbing works - The negative reports are being countered by the industry with the organization of roadshows on the use of PVC pipes as conduits for water distribution.
