Ad hoc problems have shut down Japan's Mitsubishi Chemical Corp's Kashima-based No.2 naphtha cracker having 516,000 tpa ethylene production capacity, due to safety reasons and repairs. The two furnaces at its No.2 naphtha cracker were not working since December 2007 when the unit was struck by fire, thereby reducing the production capacity of this cracker. The No 2 unit had been restarted a couple of weeks ago after a planned maintenance turnaround. Recently, Mitsubishi Chemical announced to cut production at its three naphtha crackers to 80-85% of capacity from Sept. 1 until the end of December, owing to weak demand.
