New process for free radical polymerization created in USA

14-Oct-06
Chemists in USA have created a process for free radical polymerization termed Single Electron Transfer-Living Radical Polymerization. Polymerization is the chemical reaction responsible for creating many plastic products. Unlike the "traditional" method for polymerization, in use now for more than 50 years, the new procedure takes place at room temperature, uses less metal catalyst to drive the reaction and requires a very short reaction time. The new technique that involves an entirely different approach to the chemical reaction is said to also offer chemists greater control over the molecular architecture of the polymers they create, allowing the use of materials that do not work with the traditional process.
