Nova Chemicals Corporation's Bayport, Texas, styrene monomer facility has sustained minimal damage from Hurricane Rita. After a safe shutdown on September 21, 2005, in preparation for the storm, the Bayport facility is currently re-starting. Production rates through year-end for the Bayport facility have not been determined due to uncertainty surrounding raw material supply and logistics.
Styrene monomer production at the facility is expected to resume at reduced levels by the end of the week. NOVA Chemicals estimates between 60 and 70 million pounds of styrene monomer production were lost during the outage. In order to ensure fair and reasonable allocation of products to customers, NOVA Chemicals has declared force majeure for styrene monomer and solid polystyrene.
