Brazilian state oil company Petrobras plans to build a new petrochemical complex in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, at a total cost of US$3.5 billion. The new unit is expected to attract investments from other companies in the sector, which could increase total investment to around US$6.5 billion.

The region is still not showing signs of environmental saturation
It satisfies "technical, economic and environmental criteria"
Availability of infrastructures, such as the port of Rio de Janeiro and the proximity of the Duque de Caxias refinery, one of the largest in Brazil.
