China's consumption of petrochemicals is growing by 8 to 10% pa. Increasing domestic prteochem production and supplies is necessary for the country.
PetroChina, China's largest oil company, plans to spend 27.2 billion yuan to expand the country's largest petrochemical project to meet demand for fuels and polymer feedstocks. PetroChina plans to more than double refining capacity at Dushanzi Petrochemical to 10 million metric tpa by 2008, at a cost estimated at US$3.3 billion. The project will produce 1.2 million tpa of ethylene annually. It may use oil imported from Kazakhstan, which borders on Xinjiang.
