PolyOne Corporation (USA), a premier provider of specialized polymer materials, announced it will extend its sustainable PlanetPak™ Packaging System as the standard container for color and additive concentrates in North America. The PlanetPak container replaces traditional fiber drums, which will still be available for an additional fee. The company says that its PlanetPak package is constructed of recycled materials, and itself can be easily recycled. It contains no metal bands or supports and folds flat to minimize space in storage. The system also avoids common workplace injuries such as back strains and crushed toes associated with handling heavy 250 pound drums. Further, the system is claimed to cut down operating costs by avoiding drum breakdown labor, reduce disposal fees as dumpsters are no longer filled up with cumbersome drums and generate revenue through recycling of corrugated linerboard.
The PlanetPak Packaging System was introduced in May, 2008, and has seen rapid adoption across a range of plastics processors serving a variety of industries including packaging, transportation and wire & cable. The complete patent-pending PlanetPak Packaging System includes the PlanetPak corrugated package and a customized wooden pallet which elevates the container for easy access during shipment and warehouse movements. The pallet can be safely moved with a conventional fork lift truck or an optional custom-designed hand cart. In 2008, PolyOne was awarded the Frost & Sullivan Green Excellence Award in Colorants and Masterbatches in part due to innovative, sustainable offerings such as PlanetPak.
