Government-owned Abu Dhabi Basic Industries Corporation (ADBIC) has revealed plans to set up UAE's very first industrial complex dedicated to plastic conversion industry-Abu Dhabi Polymers Park. The purpose of the polymer park will be to take benefit of the twofold increase in the polymer (which is used as a raw material) production capacity to 33 mln in the next three years. The polymer park worth US$4 bln and having an area of 4.5 sq. km will house 50 plastic product manufacturers with a conversion capacity of roughly 1 mln tpa, a significant share of which will be exported. These companies will convert the polymer resins into end products for the packaging, original equipment manufacturing, construction and infrastructure segments including value added goods such as pipes, cables and intermediate blow moulded containers.
According to one of the advisors for the project, the Abu Dhabi Polymer Park will benefit from the strong support facilities and commerce friendly environment of the Gulf region. The feasibility studies have shown cost advantages and growing market demand for a range of products including high density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene pipes, building and construction applications such as geotextiles, geomembranes and artificial grass, consumer and industrial packaging, and plastic car components.
