Qatar Navigation has signed a threeyear renewal transportation contract with Qatar Petrochemicals Company (Qapco) as well as Qatar Chemicals Company (Q-Chem) to transport polyethylene to various importing countries. This contract encompasses the transportation by sea of PE exports in ISO-certified containers from its berth at Mesaieed. Qatar Navigation has built two fully cellularised container vessels of 420 TEU capacity each and another two cellularised vessels with a capacity of 550 TEU each for the purpose of carrying Qapco and Q-Chem exports
Qapco that is an 80:20 joint venture between Industries Qatar and Total Petrochemicals signed a contract for transporting its polyethylene via sea to hubs of major shipping companies and then to various parts of the world. Qapco is already on a long-term co-operation contract with Qatar Navigation exporting over 350,000 tpa of polyethylene. Qapco has market presence in about 74 countries with almost 28% of its exports to the Far Eastern countries and 34% to African countries.
Q-Chem, a 51-49 joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and Cheveron Philips Chemical, exports approximately 450,000 tpa of PE in Qatar Navigation's containers. 60% of Q-Chem exports go to China and Far Eastern countries, 25% goes to Europe and 15% to other GCC and Middle East countries.
