Qatar Petrochemical (QAPCO) has planned a major de-bottlenecking to boost ethylene capacity to 700 kta, as well as LDPE (low density polyethylene) production. Due to its high purity, ethylene has become the ideal feedstock for LDPE and other down stream petrochemical products Currently, QAPCO is the Middle East region's largest producer of LDPE, with capacity of 360,000 mta.
QAPCO is also planning a JV- Qatofin, in association with Atofina SA (an affiliate of the TotalFinaElf- with a view to participate in the Ras Laffan Petmchemical project (Q-Chem II). The project envisages a LLDPE plant with an initial capacity of 400KT.
The company is also in pursuit of the strategic Qatarisation Programme chalked out by HE the Minister of Energy and Industry, under the directive of HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani. The 5- year plan aims to achieve 50% Qatarisation by 2005.
