Qatar plans to double petrochemical production within a year to levels above 18 mln tons from the current 8 mln tons. The current annual production of polyethylene is about 1 mln tpa. By 2012 this will scale up to 4.6 mln tpa. The current ethylene production of 1.1 mln tons will be stepped up to 6.4 mln tpa by 2012. Qatar's annual production of polypropylene will soon touch 800,000 tons and polystyrene will reach levels of 200,000 tons.
Qapco's Qatofin project, to be constructed at Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC), adjacent to Qapco facilities, would be completed in Q4 2008. The Qatofin project for production of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) will have a nameplate capacity of 450,000 tpa, with production expected to commence in early 2009.
