Reliance Industries Ltd. had stated last month that it would shut major units of its 6,60,000 bpd refinery and petrochemicals complex in Jamnagar over a period of 8 weeks between October and December. The RIL refinery has not been shut for maintenance since the last five years and it is absolutely necessary to do so before expansion activities start next year.
RIL commenced the planned shutdown of its Jamnagar refinery's various units for annual maintenance, starting with the 1,80,000 bpd fluidised catalytic cracking unit, which makes gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas. RIL has shut its main gasoline-making unit for 45 days of maintenance, and is expected to shut its crude distillation unit by the middle of next week. Reliance will commence maintenance work on one of the refinery's two crude distillation units (CDU), each of which produces 3,30,000 bpd, by the middle of next week.
