Singapore considers methanol as alternative feedstock

06-Oct-05
Petrochemical Corp. of Singapore and Exxon Mobil Corp. operate the three crackers in Singapore, which currently use naphtha as feedstock. Singapore is considering methanol as an additional or alternative feedstock to boost the competitiveness of its petrochemical plants. The country will have to import methanol, a by-product of natural gas. Methanol use could be viable for Singapore if oil prices continue to stay high. Methanol is easily shipped, unlike natural gas itself which first has to be liquefied before shipping, and then re-gasified again at the receiving terminal before it can be used.
