Reliance Industries plans to commission the newly acquired mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) division of SM Dyechem Ltd. within 3 months of taking over the plant, by March 2005. Produce from SM Dyechem’s glycol unit is planned to cater to internal consumption at RILs polyester units at Patalganga and will also cater to the local demands in the western region.
The 80,000 tpa capacity plant has been shut since 1996 following the company’s inability to pay its dues to secured creditors. MEG will be produced industrial alcohol at the plant at Kurkumbh near Pune. The other facilities of Reliance produce MEG from naphtha or natural gas.
With this start up, Reliance will be the world’s fifth largest producer of mono ethylene glycol (MEG) having a capacity of 8,32,000 tpa. (Capacity includes MEG units of IPCL as well as SM Dyechem). Production from IPCL will be utilised to cater to export markets.
