Sasol has announced a landmark compensation deal - about R100 million, for victims of the 2004 explosion at Sasol's ethylene plant that killed 10 workers and injured 350. This is the first time for South African safety practices as it is based on the belief that workmen's compensation falls short of corporate social responsibility standards as defined by business
The deal paves the way for Sasol to pay the difference between what workers and their families would receive in workmen's compensation under the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act and the actual harm and loss suffered as assessed by South African law.
