Awareness is growing that plastics packaging is a major contributor of waste - almost 500 billion to one trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide each year, of which millions end up in the litter stream outside landfills. Returnable plastic packaging has the potential to make material handling.easier and more efficient, and at the same time saving and recovering resources.
Dutch Schoeller Wavin Systems and Swedish firm Arca Systems are forming - Schoeller Arca Systems, the world's largest manufacturer of plastic returnable packaging for material handling. Their total turnover in 2004 will amount to approximately €520 million. The integration of the two businesses comes at a time when there is a global trend towards supply chain integration. Both Schoeller Wavin and Arca are market leaders in plastic returnable packaging manufacturing. Schoeller Wavin leads the European crate and tray market for the beverage industry and pooling companies, while Arca holds a similar position in plastic returnable packaging used in a variety of industries.
Global market for returnable plastic containers grows by 4 to 6% pa due to the huge advantages over traditional materials like wood, steel and cardboard.
