Sendai refinery in Japan shuts down after tremors

Following an earthquake on Tuesday that registered 6.8 on the Richter scale, Japanese refiner, Nippon Oil shut it's about 145,000 bpd Sendai refinery in northern Japan. The Sendai refinery has an approximately 40,000 bpd fluid catalytic cracker which has a propylene capacity of about 80,000 mta. It also has an 18,000 bpd continuous catalytic reformer with a capacity to produce nearly 230,000 mta. All capacities have come to a standstill, when they were automatically shut immediately after the earthquake. The units are undergoing checks to locate damages, if any, by the quake. Till damages are not assessed, a clear picture of the restart schedule is not available.
