South Korea's petrochem majors plan capacity expansion

South Korea's petrochem majors, Total and Samsung plan to expand their joint venture petrochem plant in Daesan to meet ever rising demand from China. Polypropylene capacity will be doubled from the existing 250,000tpa at an investment of US$600m (E495m). The expansion, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2007, will encompasse: Expansion of the steam cracker from 650,000tpa to 850,000tpa De bottlenecking of the styrene monomer unit A new olefin unit Most of the styrene monomer and PP will supply the Chinese packaging, automotive and consumer product markets.
