Starch based polymer output to increase in Germany on entry of two companies

German production of bioplastics is on the threshold of improving as capacities are set to be boosted. Australia based company, Plantic Technologies, is commencing production for the processing of starch-based materials at a €8.3 mln facility in Jena. Plantic technology is based on high amylose corn-starch. The other positive step is a partnership between Swiss manufacturer, Pyramid Technologies and German Bioplastics fo the establishment of a polylactic acid (PLA), production facility. To be based in Brandenburg, the 60,000 tpa plant is expected to commence operations in H2-2009. BASF has announced at the strat of the year, plans to construct a new production facility in Ludwighshafen, to increase production of its biodegradable material, Ecoflex, by 60,000 tons.
